Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Abandoned buildings have become a growing security concern in many urban areas, including Kaduna South LGA, Kaduna State. These vacant properties, often left to decay, attract criminal activities such as drug trafficking, theft, and even shelter for insurgents or bandits. According to Alhaji and Mohammed (2024), abandoned buildings provide an ideal environment for criminals to hide and plan illicit activities, posing a serious threat to public safety. This study investigates the security risks associated with abandoned buildings in Kaduna South and explores how these structures contribute to the region's security challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Kaduna South LGA, the increasing number of abandoned buildings has led to security challenges, including criminal activities, squatting by illegal occupants, and the potential for these buildings to be used for storing weapons or as hideouts by criminal elements. Despite efforts by the government and local authorities to tackle these issues, abandoned buildings continue to be a significant security threat. This study seeks to examine the security risks posed by these abandoned structures and propose possible solutions to mitigate the associated dangers.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To identify the security risks associated with abandoned buildings in Kaduna South LGA.

  • To assess the role of abandoned buildings in fostering criminal activities.

  • To propose strategies for addressing the security challenges posed by abandoned buildings in the area.

1.4 Research Questions

  • What security risks are associated with abandoned buildings in Kaduna South LGA?

  • How do abandoned buildings contribute to criminal activities in the area?

  • What measures can be taken to mitigate the security risks posed by abandoned buildings?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Abandoned buildings do not significantly contribute to security risks in Kaduna South LGA.

  • H₁: Abandoned buildings significantly contribute to security risks in Kaduna South LGA.

  • H₂: Addressing the issue of abandoned buildings will reduce criminal activities in Kaduna South LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the security risks posed by abandoned buildings and inform policies aimed at securing vacant properties. The findings will help local authorities, law enforcement agencies, and urban planners develop strategies to minimize the potential for these structures to become hotspots for criminal activities.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on abandoned buildings in Kaduna South LGA and examine the associated security risks. Limitations include the difficulty in obtaining detailed information about the ownership and usage of abandoned buildings and the challenges of accessing areas that may be considered high-risk.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Abandoned Buildings: Properties that have been left vacant and neglected, often deteriorating over time without any planned use.

  • Security Risks: The potential threats to public safety, including crime, violence, and illegal activities.

  • Criminal Activities: Illegal actions such as theft, drug trafficking, and violent crimes that occur within abandoned buildings.
